Rickroll Me Baby, Lemme Meme You All Night (& Other Bouts of Internet Video Humor)

And on the 32nd Day, the Lord said: let there be craziness on the Internet. And so it came to pass. And lo, verily, we duckrolled into rickrolling, which took off like a giant, crazed bat this April Fool's Day.

But before the rickroll, there were the ancient days of meme. Back in the 90's, when Dancing Hamsters and Dancing Jesus were the headliners. Yes, the original dancers, long before The Simpson's derivative art.

It took a long time to find even a small version of the original Dancing Jesus to share with you in this quick-look history of whacky web memes.. So far, we haven't been able to get the music playing, but the spirit is there. Nor have I been able to find the original Dancing Jesus and the Dancing Apostles. It appears they have entered through the door of 404.

But not the Dancing Hamsters. They party on, in various forms. In fact, you can get your groove on and exercise with Hampton and the Hampsters.

The amazing thing about these original memes: they were all just moving .gifs, with music. Oh, those of us who were early webmasters (and webmistresses), we thought that the first time we could insert moving gifs that verily, we had come into manna.

And then came rickrolling. 80's singer Rick Astley has found himself to be a new internet phenomena, albeit in a strange way.

Rickrolling t even made it unto the New York Mets, where, lo, it was mightily booed.




New York, New York: if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. Even if the Mets fans did roll over rickroll, the meme barrels on. Millions of Astley videos are still being downloaded, even though April Fool's Day has passed.

But before rickrolling, there was the Macarena. On the internet, macaroni performed the Macarena, now apparently replaced by the Papaya Dance.



Another new epoch in internet fads has dawned as peach and orange-clad Filipino prisoners perform choreographed dances. Although "Thriller" was the original meme hit, you can also see routines set to Sister Act's "I Will Follow Him" to Pachelbel's "Canon in D Major"(with guitar) .

Killer Tornadoes Defy Winter, Slash Through Midwest in Bizarre Weather

In Oklahoma, the freak storms made history as the National Weather Service issued almost two dozen tornado warnings. The state has not recorded a tornado in January since 1975. Although none touched down, the warnings and the severe thunderstorms were so dangerous that local TV stations provided non-stop weather coverage during prime time, pre-empting normal shows.

Northeast Oklahoma stayed under tornado watch until 5 a.m. today. Although radar picked up supercell formation and rotation in the sky, the storms didn't unleash their deadly funnels until just after they crossed state lines into Arkansas and Missouri.

It was a tense time for those in the storm strike zone. Here at I Found a Peanut headquarters, we spent the night camped in front of a TV, flashlight and emergency gear at hand and ready to head into the storm shelter.

We knew something was coming even before the tornado watch and warnings were issued. The weather whipped from below freezing temperatures to a sudden tropical feeling. The high here reached 71 degrees. However, missing from the mix was the usual "oppressive" feeling that comes in pre-tornadic buildups.

Rapidly-building weather systems like this are incredibly dangerous because they appear so suddenly. Other dangers: flooding and lightning. As thousands of lightning strikes hammered to earth, the storms also brought flooding. Emergency workers had to rescue people from flash-flooded areas.

It's not yet dawn, so we haven't had a chance to check for any possible damage from the high winds. Amazingly, the power stayed on. Parts of Oklahoma are still recovering from more than a week without power and heavy damage from the recent multi-million-dollar ice storm.



Tulsa has brought in outside contractors to help with downed limb clean-up from the ice storm. Officials fear that fallen trees and limbs, especially in country areas, will serve as dangerous fodder when the fire season begins.

Despite all that, Oklahoma was lucky last night. Our neighbors on our northeast borders weren't so lucky, nor were those in some sections of Wisconsin and Illinois. Although we're reeling from the one-two punch of historic ice storm and now spring-like supercell thunderstorms, we know that last night we managed to dodge a deadly bullet--this time.

Applause is due KOTV, KJRH, and KTUL, who all fielded stormchasters and spotters, and who worked throughout the entire night monitoring and reporting on the storms.

Believe it or not, the Republicans and the Democrats do it differently; the electors have to stand up and declare who they're for and why, and--well, it's basically a community meeting with speeches by citizens, politicing, and confusion.

In New Hampshire, the primary is a state-run function. In Iowa, the caucus system is run by the two major political parties. Citizens who want to get involved have to do more than show up and vote--these gatherings can take hours.

Stranded Tourists Rescued After Horrifying Night as Chile's Llaima Volcano Erupts

In Melipeuco, hundreds fled their homes as the massive Llaima volcano erupted in ground-shaking explosions, spewing hot lava, fire, and ash. Some were able to get to emergency shelters, but many had to camp out in the open.

Although more than 150 Forest Service workers and tourists were evacuated, more than 50 people were trapped by rising floodwaters. Authorities had planned to rescue them by helicopter early today, but heavy fog grounded aircraft. Rescue teams were able to get trucks into the area.

So far, no injuries have been reported. The government says that it is ready to evacuate the entire town of about 5,000 to safer areas if the eruptions continue.

Llaima, which means "Blood Veins," is a popular mountain-climbing destination. Its taller peak is 10,253 feet (3,125 meters) high.

Sad news from Pakistan: charismatic opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was savagely gunned down during a bombing attack that killed at least 20 today. The photo was taken just before her death.

Many believed that she had come home knowing that she would eventually be martyred. Bhutto rallied faith, spirit and resolve against the oppressive regime of President Pervez Musharraf.

Educated at Radcliff in the United States and Oxford in England, Bhutto came from a family that fought hard, and died, for freedom in Pakistan. Her father, a former prime minister, was hanged by a repressive regime.

Bhutto, a former prime minister of Pakistan, went against the tide in Islamic regions. She was the first female prime minister in an Islamist country, and served twice despite persecution.

During service as prime minister, Bhutto brought electricity to many in Pakistan--in the 1990's. She worked against corruption, and fought for health, education, and welfare improvements for the Pakistani people.

Unafraid to speak out and fight for what she believed, Bhutto had been imprisoned many times, and has been under death threats since she returned to Pakistan to lead her Pakistan People's Party (PPP). A horrific suicide bombing killed more than 100 people during her motorcade in October.

The world has lost a valiant voice; Islamic extremists have proven again that freedom, in their world view, is not an option. Bhutto was anti-terrorism, anti Al-Qaeda, anti-Taliban, and, especially as a woman leader, was a special threat to terrorists and those seeking violence and repression of others. She also wanted to assist the U.S. in finding Osama bin Laden and in stopping the illegal traffic of weapons of mass destruction by terrorists.
