In D.C. tradition, Slade Gorton's name is "floated" for Attorney General

I can't think of a worse thing for, in general, the environment and "Indian Country" than Slade Gorton weaseling his way into the Attorney General's slot. His well-known jingoistic, racist campaigns against the long-established legal standings of Native American tribes is a black mark in modern Congressional history.

Float: A verb that means to drift on the surface of a liquid.

That's the standard definition, except in the nation's capital, where "float" means to leak to the news media the name of a potential candidate — or somebody's wannabe potential candidate — for high office.

Last week, former Washington Sen. Slade Gorton's name was floated with several other names as a possible successor for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who had just resigned.

Gorton's name popped up on a list on CNN on Monday, just hours after Gonzales announced he would resign.

Nobody has copped to being the floater. No one seems to know how Gorton's name surfaced or whether the Bush administration is seriously considering him
